Many people say that the Beatles are the most influential band in history in terms of pop and rock; the same has been said about the Temptations’ impact on R&B and soul. This legendary group paved the way for countless artists and their Motown sound is still evident in music being written today. It has been more than 50 years since the original group formed, but The Temptations are still going strong, and are coming to the Borgata Music Box in Atlantic City on October 12th!
Old, But Not Out
When Motown first began to develop in the 1960s, it put Detroit on the map in terms of music history. The Temptations were an integral part of that growth process, and without their musical contributions to the era, the history of music might very well be different than we know it today. The group always consisted of at least 5 members, and although the faces have changed over time, one of the original members, Otis Williams, still tours and performs with the group. Like many of the bands that have continued to succeed and produce over a number of decades, faces change and career paths diverge, but the sound of The Temptations hasn’t changed, nor has their appeal.
Their music has earned the group three Grammy Awards over the years, and they have racked up 14 number one hits in the R&B charts, as well as four #1 hits on the Hot 100 Billboard charts. There are few groups in history that have sold tens of millions of albums, shaped the course of a musical genre, and are still drawing crowds of adoring fans more than 5 decades later. Although Motown is typically labeled as an American movement in music history, The Temptations have fans all over the world, and in 2014, they will be crossing the Pond to the UK, along with another legendary Motown group, the Four Tops. The UK has had a long love affair with Motown, as well as the Temptations. Earlier this year, The Temptations were also given the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, a living testament to how significant and influential they really are. Here are The Temptations performing last year, showing that they’ve still got it!
More To Come
They aren’t only satisfied with touring, even if it does cross the globe; The Temptations are still all about making music. They have been working on a new album since early this year, but with a few tragic passing of various members and ex-members in recent months, the new album has been pushed back to winter of 2014. However, true fans that have stuck around for 50 years probably won’t have a problem waiting another year for the next installment of smooth, beautiful music from this unforgettable group. The album is rumored to be titled “Rulers of the Soul”, and it is slated to include some major mainstream acts, including Ne-Yo, T.I., and Drake. The Temptations may hold tight to their roots, but they are also more than willing to stay fresh and relevant in today’s musical world.
