Hotel Chelsea Opens At Atlantic City

We often read in the media that Atlantic City is a horrible city, a wannabe Las Vegas, and that it is on the verge of dying. Atlantic City certainly does carry that reputation (though we don’t agree with it), however, several entrepreneurs are trying to change this fact. Taking an old run down Holiday Inn and Hilton Hotel that were neighbouring each other, Curtis Bashaw is opening a new hotel named The Chelsea, and trying to convert it into the premier nightlife destination for NJ and Manhattan urbanites. Currently, The Beatrice Hotel in Greenwich Village has been where most of the Northeast New Jersey and Manhattan high-life show up to party. It’s not an easy task but Bashaw has been sure to include a new wave of hip amenities sure to attract some newcomers to the streets of Atlantic City.

On the fifth floor alone, Bashaw has planned for a library, a game room, an oval-shaped bar, and an exclusive Stephen Starr Restaurant which offers top class cuisine. The party atmosphere will be somewhat exclusive as well, at least these are the hopes of Bashaw. He plans to have a bouncer similar to the ones at the Beatrice who will make sure that the party stays exclusive and guests at the hotel are treated as V.I.Ps. Hotel guests will be offered different styles of luxury rooms ranging from as low as $200 per night to as much as $1000. Bashaw’s hopes are that such a hotel will change party-goers attitude towards Atlantic City and make them more inclined to visit. Of course this means drawing attention away for Manhattan’s long-standing Beatrice Hotel so a deal has been worked. Hotel Chelsea is now open for business in Manhattan and we are hopeful that Curtis brings a new wave of excitement into Atlantic City. Go Chelsea!

Toll hikes on X-way to deal with transportation infrastructure needs

Prepare to pay slightly more for that trip to the Shore. Tolls on the Atlantic City Expressway will increase by 50 percent early next year if the expressway’s board approves a proposed hike. A trip from Philadelphia to Atlantic City would cost $3.75, up from $2.50.
The South Jersey Transportation Authority, which operates the 44-year-old expressway, said additional funds were necessary to widen 23 miles of the road, repair bridges, upgrade toll booths, improve North Shore access into Atlantic City, and improve Atlantic City International Airport, which the authority also operates. Though the Toll increase may be unwelcome by tourists, it is a small price to pay for the added amenities that it is likely to bring. Afterall, not being stuck in traffic on the way to Atlantic City on your long-awaited vacation is priceless, isn’t it?
The proposed expressway toll increases are the latest in a series of hikes enacted or proposed for New Jersey roads and bridges. The Atlantic City Expressway increases would take effect early next year after three public hearings and approval by the five-member board, chaired by Transportation Commissioner Kris Kolluri.
The first date on which the board could approve the increases is Jan 27, 2009 and the next scheduled session after that would be March 17. The proposed toll increases would include a $1 hike at the Egg Harbor toll plaza, a 25-cent hike at the Pleasantville plaza, a 25-cent hike at the existing 50-cent Atlantic City ramps, and a 15-cent hike at the existing 25-cent Atlantic City ramps.
Critics are continuing to weigh in against the toll increases proposed on Sep.10th, 2008, with Republican lawmakers and a truckers’ group chastising the Corzine administration for the proposed increases after the governor failed to win approval this year for a more ambitious toll-increase plan.

New Atlantic City casinos coming up in interesting locations

For the past 30 years, the Atlantic City casino experience revolved around, for the most part, sand, seagulls and the Boardwalk. On contemptuous antagonism with Pennsylvania and New York slots , in an effort to continue to exist and thrive, Atlantic City is considering intensifying casino gambling into spots that were never foresee when gambling was approved here in the 1970s. Creativity and innovation were how gambling became a mainstay in the United States , starting with the growth of Las Vegas casino Resorts in the middle of nowhere in Nevada. You never know, casinos can thrive in areas that may appear remote and unattractive.
On approval from the City Council, the gambling hall would be built by Penn National Gaming in the proposed area known best for traffic jams and sewage smells which is about a mile from the Boardwalk on the site of a former oil depot. Residents of the nearby Venice Park neighborhood voiced a commonly heard complaint about the likelihood of the traffic problem to escalate even further, but they are aware that this move would brng badly needed jobs to Atlantic City. The attorney for Penn National expressed in a statement that concerns about traffic will be addressed well before opening. Residents are questioning the choice of the location. With plenty of other vacant sites within existing casino zones still available, why would the new project be proposed in area which is very close to a residential neighborhood? Nobody really knows the answer to that question, except that the cost of land and the availability of labor at close quarters could have played into the decision.
Atlantic City today has 11 Resort-Casinos, including ones by Borgata, Trump, Hilton and Tropicana. Out-of-state competition forced Atlantic City to remake itself and focus on more affluent gamblers who also demand luxury hotels, top restaurants and A-list of entertainment. But the City and the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority decided to open the Bader bidding up to any interested parties in hopes of getting the highest price and best plans for the site. We will keep you updated on the progress of this project.
At AtlanticCity.com , we feel optimistic. With lower costs, this casino has a much better chance of making it to opening in tough economic times.

Parking Space is a top draw for visitors to Atlantic City

What’s the main reason people go to Atlantic City versus any other gambling destination? You might be surprised that it’s not the glamorous slots, or the luxurious spas.

A new survey by the Atlantic City Convention and Visitors Authority finds gambling ranks seventh on a list of why people choose to come to the resort. Easy parking topped the list, followed by the convenience of getting to Atlantic City, the ease of getting around within the city, dining options, hotel room availability, and the beach and Boardwalk. At AtlanticCity.com , we are proud to be a part of the hotel availability options for Atlantic City, offering the lowest price guarantee since 1995.

Jeff Vasser , the authority’s president, says the yearlong survey of more than 3,000 visitors shows that Atlantic City’s efforts to transform itself into a destination resort where gambling is only one of the attractions are working. The survey states that for some people, even if they have options closer to home to play a slot machine they prefer to come to Atlantic City as Slot machines are not the compelling reason moreover it’s the shopping, the dining, the entertainment – the whole package, with easy parking and stress-free hotel reservations and availability.

Visitors to Atlantic City declined last year to 33 million from 34 million in 2006. That’s only a 3% decline compared to almost 15% decline at Las Vegas. The survey also offers evidence of some of the challenges facing Atlantic City. More than a third of those surveyed also say they gamble regularly elsewhere, including Las Vegas (31 per cent), Pennsylvania (20 per cent), Connecticut (15 per cent), Delaware (8 per cent) and New York (8 per cent). More hotels and resorts like Borgata will help establish our status as the entertainment destination.
